The Renault 4 shown here was the first car owned by OriginalRace founding member Davide Cheli.

Mine was just like that in red, tied to this car are all my memories as an 18-year-old, my first girlfriends, my first concerts and my first car trips with friends, from the mountains to the sea, from asphalt to off-road. The R4 was unstoppable and you could load anything onto it. One winter we left Rimini for Madonna di Campiglio in five with suitcases, skis and boots, and when we encountered a blizzard on the way we were the only ones to keep going. Unforgettable memories.

La Renault 4 was certainly less yé-yé of Citroën 2CV e Dyanebut more rational, spacious and practical. Giardinetta born, the squared-off shape made it look bigger than it really was: it stood out especially in the Fourgonnetteand glazed and with a rear bench seat, or in sheet metal. In common with the jaunty rivals of the Double ChevronIn any case, he had the practicality and sympathy that made oui to a couple of generations of Italian motorists. The Renault 4 was named after the number of fiscal horsepower of the four-cylinder engine. It was built in 28 countries including our own, in Pomigliano d'Arco, under licence from theAlfa Romeo to annoy the Fiat 600. Hers was one of the rare willingly accepted invasions from beyond the Alps. Uncoquettish, but an honest life companion. Always the same: during her long career, prolonged for thirty years by theAugust 1961 at December 1992, the R4 has never abandoned its fundamental traits, just the necessary trickle of make-up that has improved it over the decades. So much so that many identified the series to which it belonged simply by the distinctive nose mask, with its perhaps not too clever, but unmistakable expression.
