Made in Italy
Designed by Marcello Gandini and designed by Paolo Stanzani was presented as a prototype at the Geneva Motor Show of 1971 and remained in production until 1990.
This car, which has the merit of having managed to make the house in Sant'Agata Bolognese after it was declared insolvent in 1980, it imposed the Italian-style sportscar with the typical wedge.
Unlike many of the company's other models, the name Countach not from bullfighting, but from "contacc!"a Piedmontese expression that, as reported by the Gandiniwas repeatedly used by a profiler working at the Bertone together with the team that was designing the car. The word, literally translated as 'contagion', 'plague', is used in the Turin dialect to express astonishment and wonder (corresponding to Italian Damn! o by golly!).
The first version produced was equipped with the 3,929 cm³ of Miura. The engine still provided 375-385 HP DIN (280-287kW) a 8,000 rpm. The declared maximum speed was 315 km/hby the use of conventional section tyres that made the Countach the fastest ever. This car was fitted with tyres from 215 mm on rims of 14 inches. The feature that made this model famous was the characteristic 'cut-out' on the roof, necessary to make room for the periscope rear-view mirror. This latter detail was later abandoned, but the cut-out on the roof remained and earned the Countach LP400 the nickname 'Periscopica'.
Sources of the time speak of 151 specimens set up, of which only 21 right-hand drive. These numbers make the LP400 the rarest and most sought-after of the series Countach. In addition, all Countach LP400 have even chassis numbers; only the number 1120001 has an odd chassis number. Production from 1120002 to 1120300 (150 specimens) ends with the delivery of the last example (black with white interior) sold in Belgium on 2 January 1978.
