At Frankfurt Motor Show of 1975 the Golf GTI: mount the 1600 from 110 HP of the Audi 80 GTE and promises high performance at a reasonable price; however, the company does not make production official. The following summer, the Wolfsburg company started production of 5000 specimens GTI , which were ordered in less than two months. In 1976, to the Paris salons e Turinthe 1977 range was presented: the GTI, the GL trim (which in Italy replaces the L versions, while elsewhere it is added to the existing versions) and a new diesel engine (1500 cm³ - 50 hp - 140 km/h) made their debut.

The first major changes can be seen in the autumn redesign of the 1978plastic bumpers replace metal ones and the GTI are equipped with an econometer for measuring instantaneous consumption. At Geneva Motor Show of 1979 The Golf Cabriolet made its debut, available with 1100, 1500 and 1600 injection engines. At the end of 1979, the GTI adopts a 5-speed gearbox.
