Alcune esigenze di omologazione della vettura nei campionati internazionali costrinsero la Casa bavarese a realizzare una serie limitata (600 esemplari in tutto) denominata M3 Sport Evolution (sometimes referred to as 'EVO3“), equipaggiata con una versione profondamente rivista del “normale” 2.3 litres della M3 “EVO2”. The first series M3 was only available in coupé and cabriolet versions; there was no M3 with a four-door saloon body.

In 1992, la M3 E30 fu tolta dalla produzione, poiché già da due anni era in produzione la Serie 3 E36 e i progetti per la realizzazione della nuova M3 erano già in fase avanzata.
