Regarded by many as the most important nine hundred and eleven in history, the Carrera RS 2.7 was the last version of the F series, the most powerful and the most sought-after by collectors. To emphasise the car's strong sporting identity, the Stuttgart-based company chose a name that recalled the positive image achieved in racing and used on other high-performance models: Carrera.
The origin of the term is due to the great success achieved in road racing Carrera Panamericana of 1954, where three 550 Spyder equipped with the engine type 547 occupied the three steps of the category podium, as well as third place overall.
The Carrera RS 2.7 was publicly presented at the Paris Motor Show on 5 October 1972. It was a success, and 51 orders for the version were placed immediately. M471 (Lightweight or Sport).
The main objective was to produce the 500 units needed to receive homologation FIA Group 4. Incredibly, the goal was achieved in less than 10 days.
In view of the sales success, subsequent examples were sold at a slightly higher price and within nine months orders grew to around 1600. The sales volumes allowed further homologation Group 3allowing Porsche to reap success throughout Europe.
The exterior of the 1973 Carrera RS is unique for the period. At the rear is the car's most distinctive feature; the ducktail or dovetail spoiler immediately below the engine ventilation grille.
However, this is not the only restyled element. Unlike the other 911 models, the rear wings are widened to accommodate the enlarged wheels with 7 x 15 channel, while the front bumper features a specific profile designed to achieve an increase in downforce.
To meet the demands of a comfort-conscious public for everyday driving, the M471 Lightweight was joined by a version identified by the code M472 'Touring which took up almost the entire set-up of the S.
According to some sources, this version was offered at a premium, while other sources claim the price was identical for both the M471 Lightweight and M472 Touring.
A third M491 trim produced in 1375 examples (including the 17 RSH examples) identified the Carrera RS 2.7s destined for competition customers.
Production took place between 1972 and 1973 and only in a coupé version.
The first heiress - To meet the demands of customers who were excluded from deliveries, it was subsequently decided to produce further Carrera RSs with the same engine but based on the G model (second series) until mid-1975. Production numbers were again very low; 2144 of which 610 were Targa versions.
Carrera RS 2.7 valuations: the stellar price of the M471
The Carrera RS 2.7 is undoubtedly among the Porsche models most sought after by collectors. Like all nine hundred and eleven classics from the first decade of the new millennium onwards, it has experienced a sharp rise in price, only to stabilise and in some cases drop significantly in the past few years.
Reference quotations 2021 for the American market place the value of the Carrera RS 2.7 Lightweight between 1.2 millions of dollars for a competition specimen and $680,000 for a model in good condition.
For the model Touring estimates are obviously lower and set between $700,000 for a competition specimen and the 360,000 for one classified as good.
As far as the European market is concerned, among the last documented examples sold at auction was a Carrera RS Touring Grand Prix White with red rims, which fetched a price of approx. 480,000 euro (2021).
Two years earlier, in 2019two very interesting 'Touring' cars were sold. The first with the very rare Signal Orange colour, sold in Portugal at a price of 600,000 euros. The second equally uncommon Glacier Blue was sold for 511,000 in France.
All these cars were in excellent condition and restored with great care.
In 2013, when Porsche 911s were in the midst of soaring quotationsan excellent black Touring with a sunroof (the only one sold in the UK) was priced at around 270,000 euro. The previous year in Munich a very interesting Touring was sold for 196,000 euros.
Latest sales in Italy
Among the latest specimens auctioned in Italy include a 1973 Carrera RS 2.7 Touring sold in 2019 at price of 477,500 euro. It was one of the last cars produced, not fully matching numbers but beautifully restored.
A few years earlier, in 2015when valuations had already taken off, a beautiful specimen Lightweight matching numbers white with red decals and rims, it was sold for the price of EUR 1 million.
At the end November 2021 will be auctioned at Finarte an Italian specimen of M471 Lightweight with sports palmares in excellent restored condition and with Porsche certificate of origin. Comes valued at 700,000 - 850,000 euroall that remains is to wait for the outcome of the sale.
